URL – What is a url and how to optimize it?

What is a URL?

In the next guide, we will guide you through the topic of URLs and how to best optimize them for search engines as well as for users. We will talk about good practices and also give you a couple of tips that you will be able to implement immediately on your website.

A uniform resource locator (URL) is the most basic element of search engine optimization, but it is still vital for high rankings. Url length is ranked 46th in Google’s top 200 ranking factors. Url Pod is ranked as 47th and keyword in URL as 51, which is why a well-optimized URL is so important.

What is a URL?

URL is the shortest draft of web content. Therefore, he must describe the content as concisely as possible.
Users need to easily understand where the site is located on the site and what it is about.

Website security and ssl certificates

To break down and describe just the structure of a URL, we first stop at the basics: for the two most important tags for us are:

  • HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) in
  • https (hypertext transfer protocol secure)

The difference between them is that https uses an encrypted SSL (secure socket layer) certificate, which encrypts the data and thus protects it from evil intentional data theft and intrusion into the website. Because Google is committed to the security and well-being of its users, the security of a website is critical to the higher ranking of pages in its search engine.

We recommend: if you do not yet have an active SSL certificate (https) on the website, check with your ISP and activate the free certificate on your server offered by your operator.

Now that we have taken care of the security of our website, we can look at other URL link factors that are important for website optimization.

The most important factors to pay attention to

  • The most basic, of course, is to include the keyword (and its synonyms) in the URL itself. This is how we tell Google and our users what the content of the selected page is about.
  • URL as a description – Use the URL as a short description of the content of the selected page. Try to describe the content of the page in the title in the shortest and clearest possible way (eg: domain / SEO-trends-2019)
  • Use – During our research we also noticed the use of underscores and hyphens. The difference between them is that Google – (hyphen) reads like a space; _ (underline) as a hyphen. Therefore, we recommend that only – (hyphen) be used for spaces in the domain.

The errors we tracked

  1.  Php generated web addresses
Such titles typically contain unrelated letters and numbers that are not readable or clear to search engines or users. Our suggestion is to structure the URL in a way
    domain / category / sub-category / article
Only then will Google and your users always know where they are.
  2. URLs that are too long
Many times we find ourselves at a web address that would take up so many lines of a Word document – which is very bad for link sharing, as well as the user experience itself. Try to stick to the URL length up to a maximum of 100 letters.
  3. Dynamically generated parameters
As with the PHP generated URL, the generated parameters such as: sort by, section ID, etc. are displayed here in the path.
Here, too, we recommend that you follow the rules of URL structure, according to the domain/category/sub-category/article mode.
  4. Inclusion of special characters
Do not include special characters in the url address (<,>,%, #, [], {}, »)
  5. Connecting words
In the URL, try to avoid connecting words. The new Google update has already fixed the context issues, but there is still a big problem in understanding the content. So avoid connecting words like z, and, or, and, etc ..)
  6. Rehearsal (repetition) of the keyword
We found keyword duplication on URLs on many pages:
www.domain.si/wallets/leather-wallets/big-wallets. Sometimes unconsciously, sometimes consciously. On e-commerce sites, this error is repeated many times and is also inevitable many times. But if we have the opportunity, we try to avoid it.

Cognition: so to sum up; when setting up or optimizing a website URL, include a keyword (for which you want to rank the page) that will describe and present all the content on the selected page.
